What Starbucks Store Closures Mean For Sioux Falls Coffee Lovers

Coffee lovers, you might want to set that latte down for a moment; this news may cause a minor caffeine tremor. Starbucks appears to be gearing up for yet another round of downsizing as the New Year approaches, and it’s not exactly music to the ears of anyone who relies on green aprons to start their day.

Dakota News Now reports that the coffee giant is planning to close approximately 400 more locations nationwide. This comes on the heels of a similar move back in late September, when five Sioux Empire Starbucks locations quietly flipped their signs to closed.

Those closures included stores at 1403 N. Marion Road, 2230 S. Marion Road, 1501 W. 41st Street, and 108 Venture Place in Tea. Also on the list was a newly built Harrisburg location that, in a particularly cruel twist of fate, never even got the chance to serve its first Frappuccino.

At the time, Starbucks cited nationwide restructuring as the reason for the closures. Interestingly, many of the Sioux Falls area stores that shut down were relatively new, suggesting that even shiny new espresso machines aren’t immune to corporate spreadsheets.

Now, the big question brewing locally is whether more Sioux Falls Starbucks locations could be next on the chopping block.

According to Dakota News Now, Starbucks says the majority of upcoming closures will target stores in larger metropolitan areas. So for now, it looks like Sioux Falls may avoid taking a direct hit; fingers crossed, we dodge another Blonde Espresso bullet.

Last time around, New York City absorbed most of the impact, with a whopping 42 Starbucks locations closing there alone.

Looking ahead, Starbucks says its long-term plan is to focus on fewer, stronger locations, along with new store designs rolling out in 2026. As of now, the company has not released a list of specific locations slated for closure in this next round.

Until then, local coffee lovers may want to savor each sip, just in case their favorite Starbucks suddenly becomes a former Starbucks.

The 10 Most Redneck Towns in South Dakota

Are you a ‘Redneck?’ I guess to some people, all of us in South Dakota are rednecks.

Not that being from the country is a bad thing, and it can be fun to poke fun at ourselves.

With that in mind, we found that the folks at RoadSnacks put together a list that claims ‘These Are The 10 Most Redneck Cities In South Dakota.’

What is a Redneck?

The dictionary says that a redneck is someone “…who lives in a small town or in the country, especially in the southern U.S., who typically has a working-class job, and who is seen by others as being uneducated and having opinions and attitudes that are offensive.”

Well, a few things. First, South Dakota isn’t THAT kind of ‘south.’ We’re to the south of North Dakota, but to the north of ‘The South.’

Plus that definition sounds awful mean and serious. I thought we were having fun here.

RoadSnacks leaned into the funny, Jeff Foxworthy-based version of a redneck. Then they rounded up select data on places in SD to determine their rankings. RoadSnacks Redneck Criteria:
  • Small towns
  • Least amount of high school graduates
  • Number of bars per city
  • Number of mobile home parks per capita
  • Number of tobacco stores per city
  • Number of places to get fishing gear
  • Number of guns and ammo stores per city
  • Walmarts, Bass Pro Shops, and dollar stores nearby
