US, UK And China Lead Travel eSIM Adoption, With New Markets Set to Join the Global Surge

Monday, June 23, 2025

World travelers, in particular those originating from major economies such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and China, are increasingly showing a keen thirst for Travel eSIM technology, a powerful new study by Proximus Global finds. Although the adoption trend is thus far low, the industry is on the verge of a historic paradigm shift driven by changing consumer needs and presents a silver lining for mobile operators, travel firms, and innovative businesses.

Low Awareness, Huge Potential: Unveiling the eSIM Gap

Proximus Global’s extensive research, executed in collaboration with globally recognized analytics firm YouGov, surveyed over 6,500 adults across three influential markets: the US, the UK, and China. The results revealed surprisingly limited awareness and usage of eSIM technology, despite its clear benefits for international travelers.

According to the data, just 33% of consumers globally are familiar with eSIM technology, and a significant 42% remain unsure if their mobile phones even contain eSIM capability. The awareness gap is particularly notable in the United States, where an astounding 52% of respondents admitted to having no knowledge about eSIM technology—a stark indicator of the immense opportunity for consumer education and market growth.

China emerged as the market leader among the countries surveyed, with 27% of Chinese respondents having already experienced eSIM usage, compared to notably lower figures in the US and the UK. Despite these modest figures, the consumer inclination towards adopting eSIM solutions for travel purposes is exceedingly high.

Consumers Ready to Embrace eSIM for International Travel

The concept of the Travel eSIM, a virtual SIM card integrated directly into mobile devices, is transforming how travelers maintain seamless connectivity across international borders. Travelers no longer need physical SIM cards or cumbersome roaming packages, dramatically improving convenience and efficiency for global connectivity.

The survey results are crystal clear: nearly half (49%) of respondents globally would eagerly adopt eSIM technology specifically for travel-related needs. Enthusiasm is remarkably stronger in markets such as the UK and China, with figures soaring to 56% and 60%, respectively, indicating robust regional appetite and a substantial readiness for adoption.

Retailers and Travel Companies Positioned to Capitalize on Demand

Another critical insight from the Proximus Global survey points to consumers’ remarkable flexibility concerning where they would buy their eSIMs. A significant 36% of respondents stated they would willingly purchase eSIM services from unconventional retail channels such as supermarkets, airlines, or online travel websites, highlighting a unique cross-industry opportunity.

Companies such as Revolut, NordVPN, and Carrefour have already stepped into this space, offering tailored Travel eSIM solutions and capturing early market share. For travel businesses and traditional retailers, the message is clear: entering the eSIM marketplace now provides not only a profitable standalone product but also enhances opportunities for cross-selling and additional customer engagement.

Industry Experts Advocate Immediate Action and Education

Surash Patel, Chief Revenue Officer at Proximus Global, underscores the importance of recognizing and swiftly leveraging this emergent market trend. Patel notes that the surge in consumer demand signifies that businesses positioned to provide eSIM solutions now will likely dominate future market share. According to Patel, this isn’t just an opportunity for telecom companies; any business with a sizeable customer base can readily introduce and benefit from eSIM offerings with minimal complexity.

Echoing Patel’s insights, Jorn Vercamert, Chief Product Officer at Proximus Global, highlights two crucial strategic areas businesses must pursue: innovative service development tailored to travelers’ needs and proactive consumer education. By bridging the prevailing awareness gap and clearly communicating the tangible benefits of Travel eSIM technology, businesses can fully tap into this expanding, lucrative market.

Government Insights on eSIM Accessibility and Regulation

Official government agencies, including the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the UK’s Office of Communications (Ofcom), and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China, have recognized the growing importance of supporting innovative telecommunications solutions such as eSIMs. These regulatory bodies provide guidance, ensuring consumer protections and fostering competitive marketplaces to accelerate technological adoption.

In the US, FCC initiatives are actively encouraging telecommunications companies to modernize and expand eSIM capabilities. Ofcom, in the UK, has implemented regulatory frameworks to simplify and streamline consumer adoption. Meanwhile, MIIT in China supports substantial infrastructural investments in mobile connectivity technologies, directly benefiting eSIM technology’s expansion and integration.

Seizing the Moment: Strategic Recommendations for Travel Industry Stakeholders

For businesses looking to capitalize on this burgeoning market, strategic imperatives include

  • Developing easy-to-access and customer-friendly eSIM offerings tailored explicitly for frequent international travelers.
  • Expanding consumer awareness campaigns emphasizing convenience, cost savings, and seamless global connectivity.
  • Forming strategic partnerships or joint ventures with retailers, airlines, hospitality brands, and digital platforms to broaden distribution channels.

By acting quickly, travel industry leaders and innovative retailers shall successfully turn consumer excitement about Travel eSIM technology into real market development and higher revenues. Indicators of the market are pointing out very strongly that the ones who react fast to consumers’ choices shall be leading actors in a fast-developing global travel connectivity market.
