The report from Yuyuantantian comes after President Trump defended the steep tariffs on Chinese exports, saying China deserved them and suggesting that Beijing could find ways to minimize their impact on American consumers.
“You don’t know whether or not China’s going to eat it. China probably will eat those tariffs,” Trump said during his interview with ABC News on April 29. “China was making $1 trillion dollars a year. They were ripping us off like nobody has ever ripped us off. Almost every country in the world was ripping us off. They’re not doing that anymore,” he added.
Trump has given mixed signals on China tariffs recently. In a news conference on April 22, he suggested that tariffs on Chinese goods will be significantly reduced, though not eliminated, amid ongoing market volatility. “145% is very high, and it won’t be that high,” Trump told reporters during a Q&A in the Oval Office. “It won’t be anywhere near that high. It’ll come down substantially. But it won’t be zero.”
