United Kingdom
comprehensive new survey

A comprehensive new survey conducted across the United Kingdom has unveiled a striking contrast between the nation’s most enchanting coastal getaways and those that have fallen short of expectations. Drawing feedback from over 3,800 travellers, the research highlights which seaside towns are winning hearts with scenic beauty, clean beaches, and inviting atmospheres—and which are losing favour due to outdated infrastructure, limited attractions, and lacklustre charm. The results provide a clear snapshot of the UK’s beach destinations, helping holidaymakers make informed travel choices while underscoring the urgent need for regeneration in some of the country’s once-glorious seaside spots.

UK’s Best and Worst Seaside Towns Revealed in New National Survey

A recent national survey has shed light on how British seaside towns are perceived by the public, highlighting both cherished coastal gems and destinations that are in need of revitalisation. Over three thousand eight hundred individuals across the UK shared their opinions and experiences, offering a comprehensive view of the nation’s seaside landscape.

Conducted over the past year, the study examined a wide range of factors including scenery, beach quality, local attractions, value for money, and general satisfaction. The results paint a striking picture of contrasting fortunes among the UK’s coastal towns.

Seaside Towns That Captured the Nation’s Hearts

Leading the rankings is Bamburgh in Northumberland, which achieved an outstanding score of eighty-four percent, securing its place as the UK’s most beloved seaside destination. Praised for its sweeping coastal views, historic charm, and peaceful ambiance, Bamburgh is seen as the quintessential example of a British seaside retreat done right.

Hot on its heels is Beer in Devon, earning an impressive eighty percent rating. This quaint fishing village was lauded for its serene setting and timeless appeal. Portmeirion in Gwynedd, known for its unique Italianate architecture, followed closely with seventy-nine percent, tying with Saint David’s in Pembrokeshire, Sidmouth in Devon, and Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear, all of which scored equally high.

Other top-ranking destinations include:

  • Dungeness, Kent – Seventy-eight percent
  • Tenby, Pembrokeshire – Seventy-eight percent
  • Aldeburgh, Suffolk – Seventy-seven percent
  • Wells-Next-The-Sea, Norfolk – Seventy-seven percent

These towns consistently stood out for their clean beaches, charming high streets, and overall visitor satisfaction. Their popularity reaffirms the enduring appeal of traditional seaside holidays in more tranquil, less commercialised settings.

Seaside Spots That Failed to Impress

At the other end of the spectrum, several coastal towns failed to meet expectations, with Bognor Regis in West Sussex receiving the lowest score of just thirty-six percent. Survey participants cited tired infrastructure, lack of attractions, and a general sense of neglect as key issues. However, some also noted that with proper investment, towns like Bognor Regis could still recapture their former appeal.

Bangor in Gwynedd followed with thirty-eight percent, and Clacton-on-Sea in Essex received forty-two percent, highlighting similar concerns about limited activities and outdated facilities.

The bottom ten included:

  • Southend-on-Sea, Essex – Forty-three percent
  • Fleetwood, Lancashire – Forty-six percent
  • Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset – Forty-six percent
  • Blackpool, Lancashire – Forty-eight percent
  • Weston-super-Mare, Somerset – Forty-nine percent
  • Great Yarmouth, Norfolk – Fifty percent
  • Ayr, South Ayrshire – Fifty-one percent

Despite these low ratings, there are signs of hope. In Bognor Regis, for instance, a significant £8 million regeneration project is underway to revitalise The Arcade, a key shopping and community hub. Many locals and visitors believe that such developments could usher in a new era for these struggling towns, helping them become attractive destinations once again.

A nationwide survey of over 3,800 travellers has revealed the UK’s most beloved and most disappointing seaside towns, showcasing which coastal destinations delight visitors and which are in urgent need of revitalisation.

A Tale of Two Coasts

What becomes evident through this survey is the stark divide between well-preserved, picturesque seaside havens and those that have struggled to adapt to changing tourism trends. While smaller, less commercialised towns are winning the hearts of visitors, larger resorts that once flourished during the golden age of British seaside holidays are finding it harder to compete without modernisation and reinvestment.

This survey not only serves as a guide for prospective holidaymakers but also highlights the importance of sustainable development and community-focused investment in reviving the fortunes of underperforming towns. As domestic tourism continues to thrive post-pandemic, there’s a renewed opportunity for the UK’s coastline to evolve—blending its nostalgic charm with contemporary appeal.

Whether travellers are in search of rugged natural beauty, peaceful retreats, or vibrant local culture, the UK’s varied seaside towns still offer something for everyone—though clearly, some destinations are doing a better job at capturing that magic than others.
