United Kingdom
South Africa’s

In the first five months of 2025, the United Kingdom has emerged as the dominant force behind South Africa’s rapidly rebounding tourism sector, posting a remarkable year-on-year visitor increase of over eight percent—outpacing all other major international markets. This surge reflects a growing appetite among UK travelers for South Africa’s diverse attractions, from safari adventures and coastal escapes to vibrant cities and cultural heritage experiences. With arrivals from the UK reaching ninety percent of pre-pandemic levels, far surpassing the national average recovery rate, this powerful upswing signals a renewed strength in European travel demand and underscores the UK’s critical role in accelerating South Africa’s broader tourism revival.

UK Leads South Africa’s Booming Tourism Revival in 2025 as Visitor Surge Hits New Highs

The United Kingdom has emerged as South Africa’s fastest-expanding major tourism source in 2025, reaffirming the strength of the bilateral travel relationship and marking a pivotal moment in the country’s post-pandemic recovery. According to newly released figures from Statistics South Africa, the first five months of the year saw a significant surge in UK arrivals, setting a new benchmark among European source markets and reinforcing South Africa’s allure on the global travel map.

UK Visitor Numbers Climb Sharply

Between January and May 2025, tourist arrivals from the UK climbed by an impressive eight-point-three percent compared to the same period in 2024, bringing the total number of UK visitors to over one hundred eighty-two thousand three hundred forty. This growth not only outperformed all other major international source markets but also positioned the UK as the second-highest contributor from Europe—trailing only Italy in absolute numbers.

Notably, UK travel to South Africa has now recovered to ninety percent of pre-pandemic levels, as measured against 2019 benchmarks. This puts the UK market well ahead of South Africa’s broader international tourism recovery rate, which stands at eighty-eight percent. Such strong performance underscores the UK’s deep and resilient tourism ties with South Africa, bolstered by direct flight connectivity, long-standing historical links, and the popularity of South Africa as a year-round destination for UK travelers.

South Africa’s Overall Tourism Growth Soars

Looking at the wider picture, South Africa recorded a total of 4.22 million international arrivals between January and May 2025—an eleven-point-one percent increase from the same period in 2024. Of this figure, overseas arrivals reached nine hundred seventy-one thousand six hundred seventy-eight, representing a four-point-five percent year-on-year increase.

European countries remain a core pillar of this international growth, collectively registering a four-point-nine percent boost in visitor numbers. The continent’s steady upward trend demonstrates that South Africa remains a preferred destination for long-haul European travelers seeking wildlife, beaches, culture, and heritage.

European Markets Drive the Recovery

Beyond the UK, several other European countries reported notable increases in arrivals:

  • Italy: up eight-point-eight percent, leading all European growth charts
  • Denmark: increased by seven-point-six percent
  • Switzerland: rose five-point-five percent
  • Germany: recorded a more modest but still positive three-point-one percent rise
  • Russia: though starting from a smaller base, posted a striking twenty-four-point-four percent increase

These numbers reflect a broader return of confidence among European travelers, driven by improved global travel conditions, stable visa policies, and South Africa’s ongoing investment in tourism marketing across European capitals.

The Americas Show Mixed Yet Promising Growth

South Africa’s tourism appeal extended to the Americas as well, with Central and South America leading the charge. The region delivered a sixteen-point-six percent surge in visitor numbers. Argentina, in particular, stunned analysts with a fifty-three-point-five percent spike in arrivals, while Brazil showed consistent strength with a thirteen-point-four percent increase.

In North America, the growth was more measured but still encouraging. Overall arrivals from the region were up two-point-two percent. Canadian tourism to South Africa rose by six-point-one percent, outpacing its southern neighbor, the United States, which posted a one-point-five percent uptick.

A Resilient and Diversified Recovery Path

The sustained growth across multiple regions underscores South Africa’s successful diversification of its tourism base, reducing reliance on any single market and tapping into rising demand from emerging economies and traditionally strong partners alike.

Efforts by South African Tourism and private-sector stakeholders to promote the country’s rich mix of safari experiences, urban sophistication, adventure tourism, and cultural heritage are clearly paying dividends. Enhanced air connectivity, visa facilitation, and focused marketing campaigns in key cities like London, Milan, Copenhagen, and São Paulo have also played a critical role in boosting arrivals.

The United Kingdom has driven a powerful tourism rebound in South Africa for 2025, with visitor numbers soaring over eight percent and reaching ninety percent of pre-pandemic levels—outpacing all major markets and boosting European travel momentum.

Outlook for the Rest of 2025

With the peak holiday season in the Southern Hemisphere approaching, industry analysts anticipate further upward momentum in the second half of the year. If current trends hold, South Africa could reach or even exceed pre-pandemic tourism levels in several source markets by year-end.

The UK’s remarkable return as a top performer is not just a statistical win—it’s a sign of renewed traveler confidence and a powerful testament to the enduring appeal of South Africa’s tourism offering. As the country continues to welcome back international guests, its tourism sector stands well-positioned to be a major economic driver in 2025 and beyond.
