A417 Missing Link project
United Kingdom's

The United Kingdom’s A417 Missing Link project is a transformative infrastructure development aimed at revolutionizing travel across Gloucestershire and beyond by addressing critical transportation challenges. This ambitious initiative involves replacing a narrow and congested stretch of single-lane road with a modern dual carriageway, effectively eliminating the long-standing bottlenecks that have caused frequent delays and frustration for drivers. By improving connectivity between vital motorways, the project will streamline travel between the Midlands and the South of England, ensuring faster, safer, and more efficient journeys for commuters and freight. The new road design will not only alleviate congestion but also include significant safety upgrades, such as better junctions and dedicated routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians. In addition to improving travel times and reducing accidents, the project is poised to drive economic growth by enhancing access to key cities and local destinations, making the region more attractive for businesses, tourists, and residents alike. Ultimately, the A417 Missing Link will play a crucial role in shaping the future of regional mobility, supporting sustainable development, and improving the quality of life for those who rely on this vital transport corridor.

The A417 Missing Link project in Gloucestershire is set to revolutionize the region’s transportation network, marking a significant leap forward in road infrastructure. This high-profile initiative aims to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance travel between the Midlands and the South of England.

At the heart of the project is the construction of a new dual carriageway designed to connect two vital motorways, effectively eliminating the persistent traffic issues that have plagued the area for years. The “Missing Link” on the A417 is a troublesome three-mile section of single-lane road running from the Brockworth bypass to the Cowley Roundabout in Gloucestershire. This narrow section has long been a bottleneck, leading to frequent delays and forcing drivers to seek alternative routes through local roads.

In November 2022, the UK Government approved a substantial £460 million investment to address these concerns. The funding will be used to upgrade the current single carriageway into a modern dual carriageway, drastically improving the flow of traffic and ensuring a more reliable and safer journey for all road users. This transformation is expected to have a profound impact not just on Gloucestershire, but on the broader regional road network as well.

The A417/A419 corridor plays a crucial role as an alternative route linking Gloucester and Swindon. By bypassing the M5 and M4 motorways near Bristol, it provides an essential connection for vehicles traveling between these key locations. However, the existing infrastructure has struggled to meet demand, leading to frequent bottlenecks and delays. The new dual carriageway is intended to alleviate these issues and improve travel times.

The project will follow a carefully planned route that blends with the existing A417 corridor west of the Air Balloon roundabout, while also introducing a new stretch of road that will bypass the current route. This section of the road will curve around the existing route, providing a more efficient connection for drivers.

In addition to the new dual carriageway, the project will also include significant improvements to junctions and local roads. One of the key upgrades is the construction of a new Shab Hill junction, which will provide vital connections to the A417, A436 towards Oxford, and the village of Birdlip. Furthermore, a new junction will be created near Cowley to replace the existing Cowley Roundabout, helping to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion in the area.

The renovation of the current A417 stretch between the Air Balloon and Cowley roundabouts is another key component of the project. Portions of this section will be redesigned to create dedicated routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians, allowing for safer and more sustainable travel. The remaining parts of the road will remain accessible to local residents, ensuring minimal disruption to daily life.

However, while the long-term benefits of the A417 Missing Link project are significant, there will be some short-term challenges for motorists in Gloucestershire. Due to ongoing construction, the A417 will be temporarily shut down between the Air Balloon roundabout and the A429 Burford roundabout for three weekends this summer. The closures will be in place from 11pm on Friday, July 25 until 6am on Monday, July 28, from 11pm on Friday, August 1 to 6am on Monday, August Additionally, the closure will occur once more from 11pm on Friday, August 29, until 6am on Monday, September 1.

These closures are necessary to allow for vital works on utility chambers along the affected stretch of road. During these times, motorists should expect significant disruptions, with delays and detours likely. Local residents and businesses in the area have been urged to plan ahead and make alternative travel arrangements to minimize the impact of these temporary shutdowns.

Despite the inconvenience caused by these closures, the A417 Missing Link project promises to deliver lasting benefits for Gloucestershire and the wider region. Once completed, the new dual carriageway will significantly improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for all road users. The project will also contribute to the region’s economic growth by improving connectivity between major cities and enhancing access to key local destinations.

The United Kingdom’s A417 Missing Link project aims to transform travel across Gloucestershire by replacing a congested single-lane road with a modern dual carriageway, improving safety, reducing delays, and boosting regional connectivity. This development will enhance travel efficiency, drive economic growth, and support long-term regional mobility.

As the construction continues, Gloucestershire residents and visitors alike can look forward to a more efficient and safer road network. The long-term benefits of the A417 Missing Link project will undoubtedly be felt for many years to come, making it one of the most important infrastructure developments in the county’s history. While there may be some short-term inconvenience during the construction phase, the eventual outcome will be a modern, high-capacity road network that supports economic development and improves quality of life for local communities.
