Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Uganda on Monday, March 18. He has been participating in a series of events aimed at promoting awareness of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and highlighting the positive effects of non-formal education on young people and their communities.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a non-formal education and learning framework supporting the youth to find their purpose, place and passion in the world.
Through the programme, operating in more than 120 countries, each young person (14 to 24 years old) is assisted while developing their interests, universal skills and life ambitions.

During his three-day working visit to Uganda, Prince Edward, the brother of Charles III, the King of the United Kingdom, engaged in formal and informal meetings. This included a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on Monday.
In Kampala, Prince Edward attended a youth dialogue on sustainable development goals hosted by Kabojja International School in Buzinga, a Kampala suburb. Other topics covered included climate change, culture and heritage. The students also had an exhibition displaying innovations, skills and talent.
“Today is a momentous day in the history of our school, ” reads a post on the school’s social website which also featured the Duke’s photos with students and administrators.

Kabojja International School is one of the top-tier schools which offers the British Cambridge system in the region.
The Duke of Edinburgh also attended the International Award Africa Region Conference, where he briefed National Directors about the values, progress and goals of the DofE Awards and how effectively they can be carried on to help young people achieve their dreams.
DofE Awards (Uganda) equips young people with practical experiences and life skills, creating committed citizens.

The event was hosted at Speke Resort Conference Centre on Lake Victoria shores, Munyoyo in Kampala.
The Duke of Edinburgh also had related events at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Kololo, a Kampala city suburb, where he interacted with participants and key stakeholders of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Uganda.
On Wednesday morning, Prince Edward had talks with Buganda Katikkiro (Prime minister) Charles Peter Mayiga, Princess Agnes Nabaloga and her brother Prince David Wassajja. The private engagement took place at Bulange, Mengo.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a youth awards programme founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by the Duke of Edinburgh,
Prince Edward has been the trustee of the DofE since 1988 and of the International Award since 2006. Edward later went on to become Chair of trustees of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in 2015 and was named patron of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in 2023.
