The UK government announces a £104 million funding boost to enhance local transport services, including cleaner buses, safer cycling routes, and improved accessibility across towns and rural areas

Millions of people across England will gain access to jobs, education, and public services, following a £104 million government investment funding boost. The investment will be shared across communities outside England’s major cities, allowing local authorities to determine ways to improve local public transport and drive schemes that matter most to the public.

Limited local transport poses a major challenge for communities

The government has confirmed the amount of funding each local authority will receive under the Local Transport Grant (LTG). This will result in significant uplifts for the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands, and West Midlands, enabling councils to develop detailed plans for local schemes that have the most significant impact in their areas.

The funding will enable councils to manage the delivery of their projects, utilising local knowledge about workplaces, shops, and essential services across towns and rural areas, thereby helping local economies grow.

Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: “Good transport connections are the foundation of thriving communities, which is why we’re backing local authorities to transform journeys for millions of people across England. 

This investment will help councils to improve transport for local people – from cleaner buses to safer cycling routes – connecting communities with jobs, education and essential services.

By putting resources directly into the hands of local leaders, we’re ensuring every part of the country benefits from better transport links that support economic growth and provide opportunity – all part of our Plan for Change.”

Ben Plowden, Chief Executive, Campaign for Better Transport, said: “With 70% of trips under 5 miles, properly resourced local authorities are central to the task of improving sustainable travel choices. Confirmation of this investment to help them plan and deliver schemes will be greatly welcomed in towns and rural areas, where difficult journeys can cut people off from jobs, services, and connections with others.
