Born in Edmonton in north London, Angel Gomes came through the ranks at Manchester United.

He made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in 2017, replacing Wayne Rooney in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

But after making just a handful of appearances for United, he left the club in 2020 to join French side Lille on a five-year contract.

Gomes, who won the Fifa U-17 World Cup held in India in 2017, established himself as a regular in France and lifted the French Super Cup in 2021 – bagging 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille.

The youngster an integral part of the England U21s victory at the 2023 Euros, and helped Lille to the Conference League quarter-finals the following season and the last 16 of the Champions League during the most recent campaign.

Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 this season, and will play in the Europa League in 2025-26.

Gomes had already confirmed on Instagram that he would become a free agent when his contract with Lille expired this month, sparking rumours of a return to Old Trafford, external while Tottenham and West Ham were also interested.
