Two tropical storms – Jerry and Karen – have come and gone in the last week, but we now have another area to watch for the next named storm of the season.

A tropical wave may have a chance of development midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles through early week. It is expected to turn northward into the open Atlantic and will not be a threat to the Caribbean.

Chances of development have risen over the last few days and the National Hurricane Center has tagged the system Invest 97L.

The new system is expected to take a familiar path if you’ve been watching this season – well to the north of the Caribbean, but this one may depart the tropics well to the east of Bermuda over the next week.

Should this storm get a name, it would take the name Lorenzo.

Elsewhere, chances of development are very low, including in the Gulf where a deep plume of dry air has shut down any chance of development closer to home.
