Sugar awareness drive puts healthy eating on the menu for students

At a time when unhealthy eating habits are becoming an unseen epidemic among adolescents, Birla Vidya Niketan (BVN) has rolled out a comprehensive Sugar Awareness and Healthy Eating Campaign to instill dietary mindfulness among its students. The initiative is in line with CBSE directives and guided by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).The campaign made its mark with eye-catching “Sugar Boards” across the campus, highlighting the hidden sugar content in popular snacks and beverages. The effort was complemented by sessions conducted by the school’s Home Science Committee for Classes VI–XII, enabling students to decode food labels, spot hidden sugars, and understand the link between nutrition, focus, and overall well-being.BVN also turned the spotlight on practical application. Through a Healthy Tiffin Campaign, snack-making contests, poster competitions, and inter-house events on guilt-free snacks, students were encouraged to choose smarter alternatives. Even festivals like Janmashtami were given a health-focused twist, with low-sugar recipe cards demonstrating that tradition and nutrition can coexist.In a bold step, the school canteen underwent a complete revamp, eliminating sugary drinks and fried foods in favour of millet-based, nutrient-rich offerings. BVN is also credited as the first school to integrate millets into its daily meal plan, a practice it continues with consistency.The campaign was further enriched by expert-led sessions. Ms. Diksha Khandelwal from the Institute of Bakery and Culinary Arts (IBCA) hosted a hands-on workshop on preparing low-sugar cookies and snacks. Alumni studying Nutrition and Dietetics returned to share insights, bridging classroom awareness with real-world application.School authorities emphasised that the drive was not about abstinence but moderation—encouraging healthier substitutes like fruits, dates, and honey instead of refined sugar. Principal Minakshi Kushwaha summed it up: “True education empowers students to choose wisely—on their plates as much as in their lives.”
