Stanisic ‘stupid’ to push Inter ball boy in tense Champions League quarter-final

Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanisic admits it was ‘a bit stupid’ to push an Inter ball boy in the final minutes of a Champions League quarter-final second leg last night.

Tension erupted at San Siro on Wednesday as Bayern Munich pushed for an equaliser against Inter, who eventually secured a 4-3 aggregate win.

The Bavarians’ defender Stanisic rushed to resume the play after the ball had gone out, but neither Simone Inzaghi nor an Inter ball boy did anything to give him the ball back as quickly as possible.

The 25-year-old lost his temper and pushed the Nerazzurri ball boy, causing him to fall from his seat on the touchline, which sparked an angry reaction from the Nerazzurri reserves, who had witnessed the incident from a few meters away.

Stanisic regretted his action and told German newspaper Abenzeitung (via ESPN): “Every team in the world wastes time when they’re leading. It was a bit stupid of me to push him there.”

Inter will meet Barcelona in the semifinals, with the first leg played on April 30.

The Nerazzurri remain in the race for the treble, also leading the Serie A table and advancing to the Coppa Italia semifinals.
