Sky Sports: Liverpool to ‘Step Up’ Marc Guehi Interest in Next Few Days

Liverpool Transfer Update: Guehi Links Could Gather Pace

Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is beginning to intensify, according to a report by Sky Sports News. The situation hinges largely on Palace’s involvement in Europe, with results potentially dictating how quickly negotiations might advance.

Guehi Future Hinges On Palace’s European Campaign

As reported, Kaveh Solhekol stated: “It is possible [Marc Guehi leaves Crystal Palace in this window], it depends on what happens in the game tonight. If they win the game easily so that almost they’re through the playoff, it doesn’t matter about the return leg next week, I can see a situation where maybe Liverpool step up their interest in Guehi and make an increased bid for him in the next couple of days.”

That context underlines how precarious Palace’s position is. If they move closer to qualification, they may be more inclined to sanction Guehi’s sale to avoid losing him for free next summer. Club chairman Steve Parish was clear in saying: “we cannot have a situation where a player as good as Guehi leaves on a free transfer next summer.”

This stance opens the door for Liverpool, who are reportedly willing to test Palace’s resolve with a potential offer in the region of £35m.

Liverpool Defensive Planning

The Reds have already reshaped their squad this summer, bringing in Giovanni Leoni from Parma for £26m, while Jarell Quansah departed to Bayer Leverkusen in a £35m deal. That sale leaves a gap in central defence and Guehi is seen as a natural fit, given his Premier League experience and leadership qualities.

It is also telling that Solhekol added: “So they would possibly be open to selling both those players [Eberechi Eze as well]. But it’s not all doom and gloom for Palace because Eberechi Eze will be replaced. And if Guehi was to leave, he would be replaced as well.”

That willingness to consider replacements strengthens the likelihood that negotiations could become active before the transfer deadline.

What Guehi Would Offer Liverpool

For Liverpool, Guehi represents not only defensive cover but also a potential long-term starter. At just 24, he has already captained Palace in the absence of senior figures and is admired for his ability to handle one-on-one situations in wide defensive areas. His calmness in possession, allied to strength in aerial duels, ticks many of the boxes Arne Slot requires from his centre-backs.

Sky Sports have highlighted that the timing of Palace’s European matches could be decisive. Should results align, Liverpool’s pursuit of Guehi may quickly escalate.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

As Liverpool supporters, the prospect of signing Marc Guehi feels like a move that fits perfectly with the club’s recent direction. Having already won the Premier League title in his debut season, Arne Slot has shown a determination to strengthen in the right areas. Guehi, with proven Premier League pedigree and leadership skills, could be the missing piece to sustain a strong defensive unit.

The departure of Quansah, although lucrative, has left a void. While Giovanni Leoni is a bright prospect, he is still adjusting to the pace of English football. A player like Guehi, who knows the league inside out, would provide both balance and depth.

Fans also see this as a statement signing. Liverpool cannot stand still in a competitive league, especially given Manchester City’s consistency and Arsenal’s steady progress. Bringing in someone of Guehi’s quality, at a reasonable fee considering his contract situation, signals intent.

There is also hope that Guehi would relish the chance to step onto a bigger stage, with Champions League football and a manager in Slot who trusts young players. Should Palace’s European commitments open the door, Liverpool must act swiftly to secure him.
