Simon Wong worries about decrease in spending power of locals and tourists after closure of King Parrot Group

8th June 2025 – (Hong Kong) The King Parrot Group, a prominent name in Hong Kong’s culinary scene, known for its diverse restaurant portfolio and led by Anna Chau, has made the decision to cease operations after 33 years in the industry. The closure of nine establishments within the group took place on Friday, affecting a large number of employees, according to Simon Wong Ka-wo, the President of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades.

Wong highlighted the challenges faced by the food and beverage sector, citing a decline in consumer spending from both mainland visitors and local residents, compounded by economic uncertainties. He expressed apprehension about a potential trend of restaurant closures and urged the government to attract high-end tourists to stimulate local economic activity.

The Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades has observed an increasing number of vacant retail spaces, raising concerns about a sustained wave of closures within the F&B industry. Wong pledged to monitor upcoming government initiatives and events in the latter half of the year to assess their potential impact on revitalizing the local economy and encouraging residents to spend within the city.

Established in 1992, the King Parrot Group once boasted over 20 restaurant brands and operated a chain of more than 30 themed eateries, offering cuisines ranging from European to Korean and Middle Eastern. By June 2024, only 11 restaurants remained operational under the group’s umbrella.

The Labour Department has expressed deep concern over the situation, encouraging affected employees to promptly seek support through their branch office for further guidance and assistance.
