Shaheen reacts to Trump-Putin meeting cancellation

Administration officials said a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been called off.Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Washington seeking more military support. Before that, Trump had announced he and Putin planned to meet within two weeks in Hungary to discuss the war in Ukraine. On Tuesday, the Kremlin downplayed the summit, saying no official date was ever set. You two countries are losing 5 to 7000 soldiers a week, so we’ll see what happens. We haven’t made a determination,” he said.Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, was happy with the decision and urged Trump to approve more military assistance for Ukraine.”I’m glad the White House finally pulled down the Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest, which should never have been agreed to in the first place,” Shaheen said. “Putin is only interested in killing more innocent Ukrainians, rattling our NATO allies, and increasing his leverage to avoid peace. President Trump must stop rolling out the red carpet for Putin and start standing behind Ukraine to end this war.”Trump is scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Mart Rutte in Washington on Wednesday.
