Raheem Sterling ‘wanted by former Premier League manager as he looks to rebuild European side – with unwanted Chelsea forward still part of the Blues bomb squad’

Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling is attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen, according to a report.

The 30-year-old is back at Stamford Bridge after a dismal campaign on loan with Arsenal where he managed just one goal in 28 appearances.

Even after his poor campaign, Sterling continues to attract interest from clubs on the continent, it has been claimed.

In fact, according to the BBC, the forward is of particular interest to German side Bayer Leverkusen, whose side has undergone immense change this season.

Leverkusen have lost their manager Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, as well as star player Florian Wirtz and starting wing-back, centre-back and, imminently, defensive midfielder.

The departures of the latter trio – Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka, who is closing in on a move to Sunderland, leaves new boss Erik ten Hag with a squad well short of the quality required to mount a serious challenge to Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.

Should Leverkusen follow through with their interest in Sterling, the former England star will have to prove he still has the ability to shine for a side competing in the Champions League.

At the start of the month, Mail Sport reported that Sterling had not been informed what is next for him but it is understand that he is not in Blues boss Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Sterling is one of those available for sale this summer. And at only only 30, he would not mind staying in the Premier League.

Chelsea held talks with West Ham over Mohammed Kudus before he completed a move to Tottenham and did bring up the possibility of sending players in the opposite direction. However, the Hammers indicated they were not interested in that idea.
