Pupils at century-old Hong Kong island school to be transferred under merger

A century-old outlying island secondary school that faced the axe after failing to enrol enough Form One students will merge with another institution from 2026-27, Hong Kong education authorities have said.

The Education Bureau confirmed to the Post on Thursday that Cheung Chau Government Secondary School would merge with Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School in Wan Chai.

“As the operating body of government schools, the Education Bureau has considered various factors in detail, including the welfare of students, changes in the school-age population, the supply and demand of school places, the overall development of government schools and the use of public funds,” a bureau spokesman said.

“[The bureau] has decided to merge Cheung Chau Government Secondary School and Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School to achieve better synergy.”

The bureau said that the two schools held special management committee meetings and met parents, alumni and teachers on Wednesday to elaborate on the merger plan, including how to arrange an orderly transition for students of the Cheung Chau school, provide support measures for them and strengthen cooperation between the two institutions.

It said the merger of the two schools would begin in the 2026-27 academic year and last over three years.
