Premier League club set sights on 23-year-old Barcelona youngster – report

One of the players who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at FC Barcelona in 2024/25 under Hansi Flick was left-back Gerard Martin.

Signed from UD Cornella in 2023, the left-back had spent his debut season at the club with Barça Atletic before Flick arrived and turned his future around.

Indeed, the German tactician bet on Martin for the US pre-season tour and the left-back remained a part of the senior setup ever since, even signing a first-team contract back in January, which runs until 2028.

Wolves eye Gerard Martin

Now, though, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Gerard Martin from Barcelona this summer.

Wolves are set to part ways with their first-choice left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is on the cusp of signing for Manchester City.

The Algerian left-back’s exit will leave a gaping hole in Vitor Pereira’s team and as such they have set their sights on Martin as a replacement.

The 23-year-old Spaniard ended his first season with the Barcelona senior setup with 42 appearances in all competitions, even managing a goal and six assists.

While not the most eye-catching player on the field, Martin did what was asked of him more often than not and has earned Flick’s trust.

However, should an attractive offer come in, it will not come as a surprise to see Barcelona part ways with the youngster, especially with director Deco recently said to be looking into re-signing Alejandro Grimaldo.

The emergence of youngster Jofre Torrents is also something to keep an eye out on, with the La Masia gem showcasing that he has what it takes to cover for Alejandro Balde at left-back.

Martin is currently away with the Spain U-21 national team at the UEFA U-21 European Championships. Any move away from Barcelona will likely have to wait until after the tournament.
