HONOLULU (Island News) — There is no tsunami threat for Hawaii after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on Friday.
The earthquake took place at 4:38 p.m. HST off Russia’s Kamchatka region on Friday, Sept. 12. The tsunami hazard was being evaluated with initial reports saying a tsunami hazard could appear in Hawaii is at 10:36 p.m. tonight.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) confirmed there is no tsunami threat about half an hour after the first evaluation.
The earthquake was located at the coordinates 53.0 north and 160.4 east. PTWC reported that a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake.
