Newark ICE facility escapees faced charges of assault, burglary

Four men who escaped on Thursday from the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark were being held on serious charges ranging from aggravated assault and burglary to making terroristic threats.

The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the men who broke through a wall at the immigration detention center during a reported state of disorder.

According to the feds, escapee Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes was being held on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, attempt to cause bodily injury and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. Bautista-Reyes, who allegedly came to the U.S. illegally from Honduras in 2021, was first arrested in May in Wayne Township, N.J.

Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez, also from Honduras and in the country illegally, was first picked up by New Jersey’s Passaic Police Department for unlawful possession of a handgun in October, the feds said. He was arrested again in February for aggravated assault. He’s been in the U.S. since 2019.

The other two escapees still on the loose are identified as Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada and Andres Pineda-Mogollon, who are said to be illegal aliens from Colombia. They’re believed to have entered the country in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Castaneda-Lozada was arrested in Hammonton in May on charges of burglary, theft and conspiracy to commit burglary.

Pineda-Mogollon was being held on charges of residential burglary, conspiracy residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. Weeks before being detained in Union, N.J. for those alleged crimes, New York City police allegedly nabbed him for petit larceny in April.

Conditions at Delaney Hall have been called into question by local officials including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was arrested for alleged trespassing outside the facility in mid-May. Earlier this month, Baraka filed a wrongful arrest and defamation lawsuit against U.S. Attorney Alina Habba after the charges against him were dropped.
