The monsoon season is a beautiful time to explore because of all the greenery and refreshing rain. Your furry friend shouldn’t miss out on the fun! When you travel with pets during the monsoon, though, you need to do some extra planning to make sure they are safe, comfortable, and healthy.

Dr Deepak Saraswat, Head Veterinarian, Zigly, shares a list to help you get ready for the next pet-friendly trip during the monsoon.

1. Health Check-Up and Vaccinations

Before going anywhere during the monsoon, you must see a vet. Make sure your pet is up to date on all of their shots, especially for leptospirosis, which can be more common when it’s wet. It is good to know how to keep fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes away, since these love humid weather and can spread diseases. A general health check-up makes sure your pet is healthy enough to travel and takes care of any problems that may be there.

2. Gear that is waterproof and dries quickly

It’s very important to buy the right gear. A good waterproof raincoat or water-resistant jacket will keep your pet dry and warm, which will help them avoid getting sick and getting skin infections. Think about getting waterproof booties to keep their paws safe from mud and possible infections. Bring quick-drying towels (microfiber ones work great) to dry your pet off completely after walks or splashes. This will keep them from getting wet, which can cause skin problems.

3. Keep them safe from dirt and more

During the monsoon, there is mud, slush, and sharp things that are hard to see. Bring paw balms or waxes with you to protect your pet’s paws from moisture and other things that could bother them. To keep your pet’s pads from cracking and getting fungal infections, make sure to clean and dry their paws well after every walk. Wet wipes that are safe for pets are great for quick clean-ups. Check for cuts and scrapes on a regular basis and treat them right away.

4. Be ready with an emergency kit and medications

For monsoon travel, your pet’s emergency kit should be even better. Include all regular medications as well as any that the vet has prescribed for anxiety or motion sickness. Put in antiseptic solutions, bandages, cotton, and a cream that stops itching. Carry the phone number of your vet and an emergency vet clinic from the destination. Remember to bring their vaccination records and medical records.

5. Ensure enough food and water

Bring enough of your pet’s regular food so that they don’t have to change their diet all of a sudden. Bring bottled water, especially if you’re not sure how clean the water is where you’re going. Travel bowls that can be folded up are useful. Keeping up with their routine will help your pet feel more at home in a new place.

6. Identification and GPS Tracker

Make sure your pet has a collar with current ID tags that include your phone number. Think about getting a GPS tracker that attaches to their collar. This will give you an extra layer of security in case they get lost, especially in thick or unfamiliar monsoon foliage.

7. Places to stay and things to do

Do your research and book pet-friendly places to stay well in advance, and make sure to ask about their policies and amenities during the monsoon season. Find places with covered outdoor areas or lots of room for activities inside. Find trails or parks that are less likely to get water logged and allow pets. If severe weather makes it impossible to go outside, have backup plans for things to do inside.

By carefully getting ready for the monsoon season, you can make sure that your pet has a safe, comfortable, and memorable trip with you, turning possible problems into fun times together.
