Monkey Man’s Dev Patel to Play Tennis Pro in Crime Thriller Movie The Journeyman

Dev Patel has been tapped to star in a new crime thriller movie titled The Journeyman.

Patel received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for his performance in 2016’s Lion. He has also starred in 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, 2010’s The Last Airbender, 2011’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, 2015’s Chappie, 2019’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, 2021’s The Green Knight, and more. He recently made his feature film directorial debut with 2024’s Monkey Man, which he also starred in.

Now, per Variety, Patel will play a professional tennis player in The Journeyman.

What do we know about The Journeyman with Dev Patel?

The Journeyman is being directed by Tarsem Singh, who previously made 2011’s Immortals, 2012’s Mirror Mirror, and 2015’s Self/less. The script comes from Byan and Alexis Roberts, also known as The Roberts.

“The Journeyman is the story of a struggling pro tennis player who is lured into an illegal match-fixing ring to support his family and finds himself trapped in a ruthless world of corruption and violence he may never escape,” Variety’s description of the plot reads.

Scott Franklin, Stuart Ford, and Mason Eways are producing the movie, while Shamier Anderson and Stephan James are executive producers.

“The Roberts have written a taught, suspenseful crime thriller full of twists and turns that feels like a perfect fit for a visionary filmmaker like Tarsem and a top tier producer of Scott’s caliber,” Ford said. “Tarsem’s renowned visual flair and deep experience in working with top athletes will also see him depict a viscerally authentic version of the pro tennis circuit that goes beyond what’s been seen on the big screen before. I’ve wanted to work with Dev Patel for a long time meanwhile and this is a phenomenal role for him to get his teeth into.”

A release date for The Journeyman has not yet been announced.
