Torrential rain, lightning and hail are poised to pummel southern regions of England as a yellow thunderstorm warning takes effect. The alert will remain active from 10am to 9pm on Thursday, encompassing areas including Bristol, Oxford, Southampton, London, Kent and Ipswich.
Weather experts said downpours could deliver up to 60mm of rainfall within two hours in certain locations and cautioned to be prepared for potential flash flooding, major public transport disruption, road closures and power outages.
Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: “Expect some heavy weather coming towards central and southern parts of England and Wales through the next 24 hours.
“A thunderstorm warning has been issued for southern counties of England, all courtesy of this feature running down from the Republic of Ireland into Thursday, bringing more clouds, some showery bursts of rain turning heavy and thundery, with lightning as well as hail.”
Despite this, the forecaster added there will be some ‘fine weather’ further north, and sunshine in the afternoon for Northern Ireland, western Scotland and Wales. Thunderstorms are anticipated to dissipate overnight on Thursday.
The Met Office recommends that those who expect to be affected should prepare an emergency flood kit and verify that movable objects or temporary structures are properly secured ahead of the blustery conditions.
On Friday, additional heavy downpours are forecast to strike eastern England, alongside northern and north-eastern Scotland. However, many areas in the west and south-west of the UK could remain dry and experience some sunny spells.
On Saturday, the likelihood of showers across the country is minimal, while on Sunday, heavy rain could make a comeback, particularly in the north-west of England.
What should go inside a flood kit?
The Met Office advises anyone who might be affected by flooding to prepare a flood kit. This kit should contain several key items that will help you manage better in an emergency situation.
For instance, the Met Office’s website recommends including:
- Warm waterproof clothes and blankets
- Battery or wind-up radio
- Torch and spare batteries
- Bottled water and snacks
- Insurance documents and list of contact numbers
- First aid kit and any prescription medicines
- Supplies for looking after your baby or pet
Its advice adds: “Make sure that everyone knows where to find this kit and what to do if flooding happens.”
