Mackinac Island named best fall travel destination in U.S.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – The signature clip-clop of horses’ hooves is muffled by a blanket of fallen leaves each autumn on Mackinac Island. Crisp breezes blow across the Straits, and the smell of fudge permeates the air.

Those are just a few reasons that Michiganders – and people across the country – are fawning over fall visits to the island.

Today, Mackinac Island was named the No. 1 Best Place to Visit for Fall by USA Today. The publication’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards asked travel enthusiasts to vote for their top places to visit in autumn. Last year, Mackinac Island landed in second place; it came in third in 2023. This year, it moved up another notch to claim the top ranking.

The award is a testament to the island’s captivating autumn season, which offers visitors a relaxed pace with numerous ways to experience the fantastic fall colors without a vehicle.
