Liverpool eye £100million transfer of boyhood fan from Premier League rival

Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon this summer.

The Reds previously held talks over the potential signing before the start of last season.

Gordon went on to sign a new deal in October after Liverpool’s interest cooled.

However, The Sun report that they could now return for the boyhood Reds fan – and it might cost them £100million.

Having been born in Liverpool, Gordon spent time in the club’s academy before leaving for Everton aged 11 in 2012.

He later moved to Newcastle in January 2023 after breaking into the Toffees first-team.

The England international scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 42 appearances across all competitions last season.

talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook believes a move for Gordon could materialise this summer.

The Premier League champions have a larger transfer budget than in previous seasons due to their recent approach to new signings.

Crook explained: “They have got money because they haven’t really spent in the last couple of years. “They signed (Giorgi) Mamardashvili, he’s going to come in as a backup goalkeeper to Alisson.

“They signed (Federico) Chiesa for a relatively modest sum, again, a move that probably hasn’t particularly worked out. But I always expected Liverpool to go big.

“They are massive admirers of Alexander Isak, no question about that, but it would take a huge offer to prise him away from Newcastle.

“The Gordon one is interesting. It’s one I’ve always kept in my back pocket, as one that could be revisited, because he was very close to joining Liverpool this time last year, really close.

“To the extent where the deal was down to the final stages, and I think Newcastle just decided, we actually can’t part company with this guy.

“So it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s still an itch there on Liverpool’s part that needs to be scratched.

“But I think it would take a big offer, and maybe they’re going to have to get players off the payroll before they would look at that.”

Arne Slot has already begun work on building a side for his first title defence next term.

Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong has arrived at Anfield for Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal.

The signing of the defender follows Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free transfer to Real Madrid.

Frimpong could soon be joined by his former Leverkusen team-mate Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with the Bundesliga side for a Premier League record deal.

Wirtz is set to sign for an initial £100m, which could rise to £116.5m if clauses are met.

Newcastle, Eddie Howe and a supposed preference for Premier League transfers

There is a common trait connecting the majority of Newcastle United’s (known) transfer targets. Some supporters are perplexed — given the lack of a senior signing and Eddie Howe’s end-of-season warning that Newcastle needed to act “very quickly” — by what is perceived to be the head coach’s unbending desire to acquire Premier League-based players.
