Live updates: shooter still at large after Trump ally Charlie Kirk murdered on Utah campus

US Vice President JD Vance speaks to the press in Minneapolis on September 3..

Vice President JD Vance paid on Wednesday a heartfelt tribute on X to his “true friend” Charlie Kirk.

Vance recalled their friendship beginning in 2017, when Kirk sent him a congratulatory message following Vance’s appearance on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show.

“That moment of kindness began a friendship that lasted until today,” Vance wrote.

He described Kirk’s steadfast support during his Senate and later vice presidential campaigns. He praised Kirk’s faith, devotion to his family, and willingness to engage with those he disagreed with.

“Charlie was fascinated by ideas and always willing to learn and change his mind,” Vance wrote. “Like me, he was skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016. Like me, he came to see President Trump as the only figure capable of moving American politics away from the globalism that had dominated for our entire lives.”

Vance credited Kirk for his ability to rally people around the Republican cause.

“So much of the success we’ve had in this administration traces directly to Charlie’s ability to organize and convene. He didn’t just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government.”

Vance gave details about his personal friendship with Kirk, describing group chats with him and “people he introduced me to over the years,” and celebrating milestones and supporting each other through loss.

“You ran a good race, my friend,” Vance wrote. “We’ve got it from here.”

Vance plans to travel to Utah Thursday, according to a source familiar with his plans.
