Kai Tak Sports Park is “operationally sound” with bookings confirmed well into 2027, according to the city’s culture chief, adding that the function of Hong Kong Stadium’s main pitch may be reconsidered and its surrounding facilities repurposed to provide more office space for sports associations.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui on Sunday described the new HK$30 billion (HK$3.86 billion) complex in Kai Tak as having entered an “operationally sound phase” eight months after it opened in March, and following an initial series of events.
“The schedule [for Kai Tak] is indeed very packed,” she told a television programme. “We cannot reveal yet what these events are as the organisers have their considerations in announcing their events … but we are already fielding applications well into 2027.”
Law highlighted several successful high-profile sporting and entertainment events that the arena had hosted, including the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) that was held in Hong Kong for the first time in October, as well as football, basketball and handball events.
On the entertainment side, Law pointed to international acts such as JJ Lin’s concerts in May, as well as coming performances from Korean superband Blackpink, the MAMA Awards, and the just-announced New Year’s Eve concerts by mainland star Zhou Shen.
The culture secretary added that authorities were in discussions with past event promoters about staging exciting football matches in the summer of 2026, to cash in on the global buzz surrounding that year’s World Cup.
