Is It a True Story & Autobiographical?

People are wondering if Amy Schumer’s Hulu show Life & Beth is a true story and autobiographical. Here is everything you need to know.

Is Life & Beth based on a true story?

Life & Beth is not entirely based on true events. It is fiction but Amy Schumer has drawn from her life experiences and projected them into the series.

In a March 2022 interview with USA Today, Amy Schumer estimated that 50 percent of the series was true and autobiographical, mentioning that a lot of Beth’s character was about Schumer herself, but she took creative liberties with other characters in the story.

She said, “A lot about me personally was reflected, but then I took liberties with the other characters.” Interestingly, Schumer’s middle name is Beth, and like the Life & Beth protagonist, she has a younger sister and divorced parents. Also both Amy and Beth’s fathers experienced financial struggle at some point in their lives.

However, according to Distractify, one of the differences between Amy Schumer’s real life and Beth’s life in Life & Beth is Amy’s mother being alive. However, she divorced Amy’s father after having an affair.

Schumer revealed in the interview that she had begun to develop Life & Beth while she was pregnant with her son Gene after she skimmed through old journals from her past and visited many places where she spent her childhood.

Is Life & Beth autobiographical and based on Amy Schumer’s life?

Life & Beth is semi-autobiographical and inspired by Amy Schumer’s life experiences.

For instance, Beth’s romance with Michael Cera’s character John in the show is very similar to Amy’s real-life relationship with her husband Chris Fischer. Schumer had mentioned earlier that Fischer was diagnosed with autism. Now, this similarity becomes more apparent in Season 2, when John learns as an adult that he is on the autism spectrum.

Michael Cera also reportedly shadowed Fischer to authentically portray John’s farming skills.
