Simone Inzaghi was glad Inter ‘kept cool heads’ against Bayern Munich to reach their second Champions League semi-final in three years, facing Barcelona. ‘We want our journey to keep going.’

The Nerazzurri ultimately thanked their 2-1 first leg advantage in Munich, as that made sure the 2-2 at San Siro was enough to see them through 4-3 on aggregate to the semi-final against Barcelona.

It was a very tough match, as Harry Kane’s angled drive levelled the tie on aggregate, but Inter had turned it around within nine minutes through Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard, both on corners.

Eric Dier’s looping header set up a tense finale, but they clung on and got the celebration started.

“It was a wonderful evening, and the fans helped us so much against a very strong opponent. Bayern played two great games, but were up against a side that wanted qualification at all costs with two wonderful performances,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did very well, helped each other out and sacrificed ourselves for the team, which is the only way to beat a side like Bayern Munich.”

In both legs, Inter reacted ferociously to a Bayern Munich goal and struck back straight away, so this character could get them far in the competition.

“We also keep cool heads, because we conceded somewhat against the run of play with Mkhitaryan down hurt. We stayed in the game, stayed clear-headed, turned it around, then conceded 2-2 and in the last 15-20 minutes Bayern poured forward with Gnabry and Coman on from the bench. Again, we kept our heads throughout.”

There was extra reason to be pleased, because all the players at risk of suspension managed to avoid yellow cards, so those are now wiped clean going into the semi-finals.

It was a little confusing when someone was booked on the touchline late on, as it wasn’t entirely clear who got that card.

“No, it was Dimarco. Fortunately, it wasn’t me or Bastoni, otherwise we’d have been watching from the stands in Barcelona,” explained Inzaghi.

“We’ve also got to remember who we were up against. Bayern Munich had won the previous four visits to San Siro, so we knew it would be difficult, but this result repays us for all our efforts. We go into the semi-final with great pride, wanting our journey to keep going,” added Inzaghi.

“Now we hope to get everyone back from injury, as it is not easy to play every 48-72 hours, but the players, staff, club and fans all achieved something remarkable. Not everyone gets to the Champions League semi-final and we’re very happy.”

The first leg of the semi-final will be in Catalunya on April 30, with the decider at San Siro on Tuesday May 6.
