The clash promises fireworks, not just because it pits two of football’s biggest names against each other, but also as it marks Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first return to Merseyside since his controversial summer move to the Spanish capital.
Both sides have begun their Champions League campaigns strongly. Real Madrid boast a perfect record so far, while Liverpool have won two of their opening three fixtures. Victory here would push either club closer to securing early qualification for the knockout stages, while defeat could leave lingering doubts about their chances of automatic progression.
Los Blancos head into the tie in imperious form. Xabi Alonso’s men have won six straight matches in all competitions, including emphatic victories over Barcelona and Juventus. They also sit five points clear at the top of La Liga, having claimed 10 wins from 11 games so far.

Alexander Isak remains a major doubt for Liverpool, with the £125million striker sidelined for the last three matches due to a groin injury. The Swede has endured a slow start to life at Anfield and given his lack of a full pre-season, the Reds are unlikely to risk him prematurely.
Curtis Jones is also a doubt after picking up a groin problem during the 3-2 defeat to Brentford. The midfielder missed training in the lead-up to the Aston Villa clash and faces a race against time to be fit.
Elsewhere, Liverpool will be without Alisson Becker, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni, all of whom remain sidelined through injury. Alisson and Frimpong are not expected to return until after the upcoming international break, while Leoni has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL tear.
Real Madrid team news
Alonso’s defence has taken a few hits in recent weeks. Captain Dani Carvajal is expected to miss out, paving the way for Alexander-Arnold to start against his former club.
Both Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are also likely to remain sidelined, meaning Eder Militao and former Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen should continue their partnership at centre back.
Further forward, Real Madrid are at full strength. Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham are all fit and expected to start in what promises to be a formidable attacking line-up.
Head to head
Liverpool will take confidence from their most recent meeting with Real Madrid, which came just under a year ago. On that occasion, they earned a 2-0 victory at Anfield, with Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo grabbing the goals.
That result, however, was a rare bright spot in what has otherwise been a difficult recent history against the Spanish giants. Before that win, Liverpool had lost seven of their previous eight encounters with Real – a run that included painful defeats in the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals, as well as a humbling 5-2 loss at Anfield in 2023.
