HONG KONG – Temporary heat shelters were opened in Hong Kong on Tuesday as temperatures rose above 33 degrees Celsius in the city, with the mercury recording over 36°C in Sheung Shui in the New Territories.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued another very hot weather warning on Tuesday morning and reminded members of the public to take precautions against heatstroke. The maximum temperature recorded at the observatory in Tsim Sha Tsui was 33.4°C while Sheung Shui logged a high of 36.1°C around 3:18 pm.

The Home Affairs Department said it opened 19 temporary heat shelters, which provide bedding and a sleeping place for people in need, in the territory’s different districts.

An anticyclone aloft is delivering generally fine and very hot weather to southern China, while a broad trough of low pressure is causing unsettled conditions in the central South China Sea, the HKO said.

According to the observatory, this sweltering weather is expected to continue through Wednesday, with fine conditions during the day. However, one or two evening showers are anticipated to bring some relief from the heat.

The remainder of the week will be mainly cloudy, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Thursday is expected to be particularly windy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms, it added.
