The airline said on Monday night all inbound and outbound flights between 6pm Tuesday and 6am Thursday were cancelled.
Also cancelled were some long-haul outbound flights from Hong Kong on Tuesday morning, including CX383 to Zurich, CX880 to Los Angeles and CX844 to New York. Some flights departing on Tuesday morning and afternoon were also axed, it said.
“This super typhoon will have a significant impact,” Cathay said. “We are fully committed to ensuring the safety of our colleagues and operations. At the same time, we will have sufficient resources in place to resume flight operations once the storm passes.”
The airline said it had moved some of its aircraft away from Hong Kong, with a source saying the locations were at nearby ports, including in mainland China.
It said it expected a staggered and gradual resumption to its flight schedule throughout Thursday into Friday.
