Hong Kong veteran lawmaker Michael Tien says he may retire ahead of election

Veteran lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun has said he is considering stepping down following a wave of senior Hong Kong legislators over 70 who have revealed their decision to retire.

Separately, the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong (BPA) pledged to field more “new faces” in the coming poll after four of its nine sitting lawmakers ruled out seeking re-election amid calls for more new blood in the Legislative Council.

Tien, 75, said on Friday that he was thinking about dropping out of the race as he weighed the prospects of securing sufficient nominations and winning.

He added that the future of Roundtable, the party Tien founded in 2017, was being deliberated.

“I am 75 years old, not 70; I am probably the oldest [lawmaker] or close to it. Colleagues of similar age, many of whom I greatly admire with far more experience than I, announce their retirement one by one,” Tien said.

“I started considering what I should do. I have been putting pressure on myself. Should I just care about myself alone?”

國際培幼會研究：一成受訪女性陷月經貧窮　半數月經困擾不想當女人

國際培幼會（香港）委託聖方濟各大學，共同進行首份全港性月經貧窮研究調查《香港月經貧窮現況分析》，2025年6至8月以隨機電話訪問收集1,000名12至54歲本港女性的意見；並於8月至9月期間進行7場焦點小組訪談，對象包括女性劏房居民、食物銀行受助者，少數族裔、以及院舍少女等弱勢群體。研究顯示，每十名受訪者中便有一人因經濟困難難以購買或取得月經用品，以人口推算即約有23.6萬名12至54歲女性處於「月經貧窮」狀態；另超過27%的女性及接近三成少女及年輕女性因經濟拮据而需要節省使用相關衛生用品，曾經歷某種形式的「月經貧窮」。國際培幼會（香港）總幹事蕭美娟表示，培幼會十分關心本港女童是否也遭遇月經貧窮問題，而本港相關研究與數據不足，因此培幼會開展這次研究調查，期望透過調查了解相關情況，為未來推動月經平權及消除「月經貧窮」提供實證基礎。另外，聖方濟各大學助理教授霍婉紅及馮家宜指出，根據香港家庭計劃指導會建議，衛生巾應至少每四小時更換一次，即每日不少於六次，以維持基本衛生並降低感染風險。然而，調查發現約四分之一的受訪者每日僅更換三次月經用品，遠低於建議標準。焦點小組訪談進一步反映，不少基層少女為節省開支而減少用品消耗，會採取「頻密如廁排血」或「在衛生巾上加墊紙巾」等方式延長使用時間。這些因經濟壓力而衍生的應對策略，雖能暫緩支出負擔，卻可能增加健康風險，凸顯「月經貧窮」對女性衛生與健康管理的深層影響。調查亦顯示本港「月經羞辱」普遍，近三分二女性曾聽聞或經歷負面評論；近半數（49.6%）受訪者因月經帶來的身心困擾，而表示「寧願自己不是女性」。其中，「月經羞辱」的情況在12至24歲年輕女性群組中最為嚴重，18歲以下受訪者中，34.8% 對月經感到尷尬或羞恥，比例為各年齡組別中最高。此外，六成受訪者表示，學校、職場或公共場所未提供月經用品，或不確定是否提供。在經期健康管理方面，霍補充調查發現，雖然95.8%的女性曾出現經期不適，但93.3%從未求醫；逾六分之一的受訪者曾有與月經相關的感染或婦科問題，其中17.3%從未接受治療，或會形成隱性健康危機。 Source link
