Hong Kong police have apprehended a 19-year-old man in connection with a suspected hit-and-run accident that killed a 71-year-old man on a bicycle on Tuesday, the Post has learned. The arrest came a day after a couple, including a woman believed to be the suspect’s grandmother, were taken into custody.
A source familiar with the matter said the suspect, who was allegedly the driver of the car involved in the incident, was arrested before 10am on Thursday at his home in Mai Po Village in Yuen Long on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop and report the incident.
The insider said the suspect did not have a full driving license, while the learner’s license that he previously held had expired in May.
The suspect had been at large since the fatal crash on Tuesday. A 57-year-old woman, suspected of being the owner of the car that killed the cyclist, and her 67-year-old husband, were arrested on Wednesday morning. The husband was released on bail on Thursday while the woman is still being detained for investigations.
“Police suspect preliminarily that the driver was the arrested person’s grandson,” the insider said of the 57-year-old woman.
Police issued a statement in the early hours of Wednesday, saying that a 71-year-old cyclist was killed after a car rammed into him while approaching Wing Ning Tsuen in Yuen Long.
