Hong Kong man arrested over HK$140 million of suspected cocaine found in truck

Hong Kong police have arrested a 31-year-old man after discovering more than HK$140 million (US$17.9 million) worth of suspected cocaine in a truck.

Police said on Thursday that officers from the narcotics bureau intercepted a suspicious light goods vehicle at a metered car park near Kau Sai San Tsuen in Sai Kung the morning before.

A search of the vehicle’s rear compartment uncovered 10 nylon-wrapped packages containing 200 bricks of suspected cocaine, each weighing about 1kg (2.2lbs), the force said.

Police estimated the haul had an estimated street value of HK$146 million.

The suspect was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs. He is set to appear at Kwun Tong Court on Friday.

Police said preliminary investigations suggested the suspect, who claimed to be jobless, was likely to have been recruited using financial incentives by a drug syndicate to help transport the narcotics for local distribution.
