Hong Kong government issues safety reminder for residents in or travelling to the United States

9th June 2025 – (Hong Kong) Amid the ongoing protests and unrest in the United States, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has issued a safety advisory for Hong Kong residents currently in or planning to visit the United States, emphasising personal safety precautions.

A Government spokesperson emphasised, “Residents planning to travel to or already present in the United States should stay informed about local conditions, exercise vigilance, prioritize personal safety, avoid large gatherings, and stay updated on local advisories.”

The Security Bureau has updated the Outbound Travel Alerts (OTA) webpage with additional details pertinent to the United States and will continue to monitor the situation closely, with any developments communicated through various channels including media releases, the bureau’s mobile application, and the OTA webpage (www.sb.gov.hk/eng/ota).

For Hong Kong residents requiring assistance in the United States, they can utilize the 24-hour hotline of the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of the Immigration Department (ImmD) at (852) 1868, utilise the 1868 hotline using network data, access the 1868 Chatbot via the Immigration Department Mobile Application, message the 1868 WhatsApp assistance hotline, engage with the 1868 WeChat assistance hotline, submit the Online Assistance Request Form, or contact the Chinese Embassy/Consulate-General in the United States of America through the consular protection hotlines provided.

Residents are encouraged to register their contact information and travel itinerary through the online Registration of Outbound Travel Information service (www.gov.hk/roti) offered by the ImmD when travelling outside Hong Kong. This registration enables the ImmD to efficiently disseminate relevant information to residents via SMS or other suitable means promptly when necessary.
