A homicide suspect is dead and police have canceled a shelter in place alert after a SWAT standoff in Spalding County.

The standoff happened along Ashley Drive with Griffin police and Spalding deputies assisting a Jonesboro police investigation. Officials have not identified the suspect, but said he was wanted in connection to a woman’s death in Jonesboro.

“We’ve been out here several hours with a standoff and since then, the suspect did turn the gun on himself when we went to close in on him with the SWAT team,” Jonesboro Police Chief C.E. Cato said.

The Jonesboro Police Department had been searching for the suspect since a deadly apartment fire earlier Saturday. Cato said his officers found a woman dead inside the apartment, but determined she didn’t die from the fire.

Police tracked the suspect to his home in Griffin and requested assistance from the other jurisdictions.

Police said the suspect and victim knew each other. Cato said the man’s family tried to help them with the negotiation process.

“They didn’t want to see anything happen to their loved one. They didn’t want to see anything happen to law enforcement,” Cato said. “A sad day for multiple families.”
