GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Cricket fans across the Caribbean are counting down to the return of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), and this year’s highly anticipated fourth edition is heading to new territory — Guyana.
The tournament is set to bowl off on September 6, 2025, and will culminate with the grand final on September 17 at the iconic Providence Stadium.
A new home for Caribbean women’s cricket
After debuting in St. Kitts and Nevis in 2022, and then moving to the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad & Tobago for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the 2025 WCPL will make its first-ever appearance in Guyana.
The tournament format remains unchanged: three powerhouse franchises — the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW), Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), and Barbados Royals (BR) — will clash in a round-robin format, with each team facing the others twice before the top two meet in the final.
All seven matches, including the title decider, will unfold under the lights at Providence, promising a thrilling atmosphere for cricket lovers in the region.
Royals reign supreme, but can they be toppled?
The Barbados Royals enter the 2025 edition as the undisputed team to beat. After finishing runners-up in the inaugural 2022 season, they stormed to back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, including a hard-fought four-wicket victory over the Knight Riders in last year’s final.
The Knight Riders, champions of the first WCPL season in 2022 and finalists again in 2024, will be hungry to reclaim the trophy. Meanwhile, the Amazon Warriors, although yet to clinch a title, have shown steady improvement with a second-place finish in 2023 and third in the other two editions.
Matthews: Queen of bat and ball
Tournament standout Hayley Matthews continues to dominate the WCPL record books. The star all-rounder is the leading run scorer with 424 runs and has also claimed the most wickets (23) since the competition’s inception.
With Matthews in sublime form and rival squads bolstered by emerging regional talent, fans can expect another gripping chapter in the growth of women’s T20 cricket in the Caribbean.
