Future Samsung phones could get 50W wireless charging as Qi 2.2 gets closer

Samsung phones currently only support 15W wireless charging speeds. While the company recently adopted the Qi 2.1 standard for some of its phones, it only brings magnetic alignment (via compatible cases) and not faster wireless charging. However, as the Qi 2.2 standard is nearing its launch, starting with Apple, future Samsung phones could adopt it for up to 50W fast wireless charging.

Apple is on the verge of launching world’s first Qi 2.2 charging accessories with 45W charging

Apple is working on two new wireless chargers that comply with the upcoming Qi 2.2 standard. They bring wireless charging speeds of up to 50W. Apple’s upcoming wireless chargers were spotted (via 91Mobiles) in Taiwan’s NCC certification website. Based on their images, they feature up to 45W wireless charging.

They could be the world’s first Qi 2.2 wireless chargers and could go official in the third quarter of this year alongside the iPhone 17 series.

In the future, other brands, including Google and Samsung, could launch their Qi 2.2 compatible devices. Samsung’s System LSI division has made it official that it has designed a new chip called S2MIW06 that facilitates up to 50W wireless charging, and it could be used in Samsung’s upcoming high-end phones.

The S2MIW06 wireless charging IC supports transmission and reception, which means it could be used for charging and receving charge from other devices. Google is also working on improving the Qi 2.2 standard before it could come to Android devices in the future.

It would be great if Samsung brings Qi 2.2 charging with the Galaxy S26 next year, as most other brands have surpassed Samsung in terms of wired and wireless charging speeds. Even Apple is offering faster wireless charging speeds compared to Samsung. And the South Korean firm can’t risk getting left behind others in this cut-throat smartphone market.
