From Qinghai's plateaus to Hong Kong's plates, Qinghai has established large-scale vegetable supply bases for Hong Kong in recent years.

This month, the province has also stepped up food inspection systems through cooperation with Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre.

In the third part of our series on Qinghai, Jacky Lin reports from two agricultural hubs.

At 2,600 metres above sea level, these fields in Huzhu County are part of Qinghai's 57,000-mu or 3,800-hectare agricultural export base, supplying fresh produce to Hong Kong and Macao.

They include some of Hong Kong people's favourite leafy greens: antioxidant and vitamin-packed kale and romaine salad lettuce.

Local agricultural experts said Qinghai's high altitude and long sunlight hours help prevent pests without the need of pesticides, allowing many crops to acquire organic certification more easily.

Zhu Anxiang, Director of the Huzhu County Vegetable Technical Service Centre said after harvesting, they pre-cool and package to Hong Kong standards, with testing completed locally, so no additional customs checks are needed.

From field to fridge to fork, she said it takes no more than 72 hours to deliver the vegetables from Qinghai to Hong Kong.

Earlier this month, Qinghai's market regulator and Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre jointly launched a testing lab.

Authorities hope Hong Kong's certification can help Qinghai's harvests reach international aisles.

Xu Shoulong, President of the Qinghai Institute of Product Quality Inspection and Testing said Hong Kong's certification opens the doors of more than 60 countries for their farm produce.

Another star product here is Qinghai's rapeseed which packs nutrients, including carotene, Omega-3 and selenium - proven to improve immunity and cardiovascular health.

15 Qinghai universities and firms are working to develop higher-nutrition rapeseed variants.

Last month, this agricultural technology firm has exported 120 metric tonnes of rapeseed to Mongolia. Its next step is to set up a demonstration zone in Kazakhstan to further promote its products.
