Explainer | Want to get the most out of Hong Kong’s parking options? The Post has answers

Hong Kong motorists could start paying double the current fares for public metered parking from late September as part of transport authorities’ plans to generate more revenue amid the city’s financial deficit woes.

Public roadside parking is already a much sought-after service in the city due to being more convenient and cheaper than privately run facilities.

The Post lists a number of alternatives for motorists in the bustling districts of Central, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui.

1. How much does public parking cost?

The city government earlier this month proposed doubling the rates at public metered parking spaces from HK$2 (25 US cents) per 15 minutes to HK$4, with the policy potentially starting from September 28.

Authorities said the rate had remained the same for 31 years, noting that the inflation rate had reached 70 per cent over that period.
