Estevao ‘Ready’ for Premier League Move, Says Palmeiras Boss

Palmeiras boss Abel Ferreira believes teenage sensation Estevao Willian is ready to make the jump to Premier League football after bidding farewell to the Brazilian side with a memorable performance against Chelsea in the Club World Cup.

The 18-year-old, widely regarded as one of Brazil’s most exciting young talents, marked his final appearance for Palmeiras by scoring a stunning equaliser in Friday’s quarter-final clash in Philadelphia. Despite his efforts, Chelsea edged the contest 2-1 thanks to a late own-goal, but Estevao’s impact was undeniable.

Having agreed to join Chelsea over a year ago in a deal reportedly worth €57 million (£48.3m), including bonuses, Estevao will now complete his long-awaited move to Stamford Bridge.

Ferreira was full of praise for the youngster, comparing him to family. “I don’t have sons, only daughters, but he is like a son to me,” the Portuguese coach said at Lincoln Financial Field. “I spoke to Enzo Maresca before the match and told him they’ve not only signed an amazing player but also a wonderful person.”

He continued: “Estevao is a player with rare quality—someone who can decide games on his own. Of course, at the beginning he will make mistakes, but with the right support, he’ll flourish. Chelsea must take care of him and help him grow.”

Estevao was voted the best player in Brazil’s top division last season and has impressed further during the Club World Cup, showing flashes of brilliance that justify his hefty price tag. With a packed squad of attacking options at Chelsea, the teenager will have to fight for his place—but his potential is clear.

Ferreira urged patience and support, noting the challenges Estevao may face in adapting to life in England. “It won’t be the same. The weather’s different, the nights are longer, and the sun barely comes out,” he joked. “But Chelsea have all the right conditions in place to support him. He’s a fantastic talent, and I truly believe he’s ready.”

After the final whistle, Ferreira was seen warmly embracing Estevao in front of reporters, a clear sign of the strong bond they share.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca also heaped praise on the Brazilian prodigy following the match. “I spoke to him after the game and told him it was the perfect night—he scored, and we won,” Maresca said.

“You can see how talented he is. He’s a fantastic player, but the most important thing now is to help him adapt and feel happy in his new environment. Once that happens, there’s no doubt he’ll become an important player for us.”

Chelsea’s growing collection of young talent was further on display in Philadelphia, as new signing Jamie Gittens—recently acquired from Borussia Dortmund—was also in attendance.

“Jamie was here tonight, he joined us on the pitch and will stick around for a day or two before going on holiday,” said Maresca. “He’ll rejoin the team when pre-season begins.”

As Chelsea continue to invest in youth, all eyes will be on how Estevao settles into life in London and whether he can live up to the high expectations already placed on his shoulders.
