England international Angel Gomes is joining Marseille on a free transfer after rejecting Premier League interest, talkSPORT understands.

Tottenham had been hopeful of signing Gomes, whose Lille contract expires this month.

The former Manchester United youngster also held talks with West Ham.

Gomes, 24, had already confirmed he would leave Lille upon the expiration of his contract in May.

“After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it’s time for me to say goodbye,” Gomes wrote on Instagram.

“This club has been more than just a team — it’s been a family, a home, and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch.

“Like any journey, there were ups and downs, highs and lows, but I’m truly grateful to my teammates and the fans for sticking with me throughout.

“I’m proud of what we achieved together and thankful for every moment.

“To the fans – thank you for your amazing support and for believing in me. I will forever be grateful. I always gave everything I had for the badge and for all of you.”

Gomes joined Lille from the Red Devils in August 2020 and went on to make over 130 appearances for the French side.

He was also handed his senior England debut by former interim boss Lee Carsley last September when he came on in the second half of the Three Lions’ 2-0 win away to Ireland.

Gomes started the following match against Finland, which finished with the same scoreline, and earned rave reviews for his performance at the base of midfield.

Carsley heaped praise on the 24-year-old following the contest and insisted Gomes ‘fully deserves’ the plaudits that came his way.

“He loves football, he watches football, he’s interested in tactics, he knows all the players in any league,” Carsley said.

“If you ask him for any feedback, you need to be prepared that he’s going to give you some feedback on the session, or how we’re going to build up, or the positions.

“He’ll often say about some build-ups he’s done with other clubs, or what he’s played against, because he’s obviously playing in France, so he sees different things.

“He fully deserves it.”

Gomes also started in the 3-1 away win over Finland and even bagged himself an assist.

Although Gomes enjoyed a bright start to the 2024/25 season, he struggled for minutes in the second half of the campaign.

Gomes was sidelined for four games with a calf injury in December, but made just four appearances for a total of 122 minutes in 2025.

He joins a Marseille side that finished second in Ligue 1, their best finish in three years, and will compete in next season’s Champions League.
