Elon Musk’s X removes 1.7 million bots, sow sets sights on DM spam

In a move to improve the user experience, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has removed around 1.7 million bots. The removed bots were flooding reply sections with spam and irrelevant content. The announcement was made by Nikita Bier, Head of product at X confirmed that the purge in a post on the platform earlier this week. “This week we purged 1.7 million bots engaging in reply spam. You should start noticing improvements in the coming days,” Bier wrote on X.” The bot removal is part of X’s broader initiative to combat spam and restore meaningful engagement across the platform. Users complaints about the automated accounts increased a lot. Users mentioned that these bot accounts hijacked the replies with promotional links, scams and irrelevant chatter.

What’s next: DM spam in the crosshairs

After this spam cleanup, X is also turning its attention to the spam in direct messaages. The company said the DMs are becoming another hotspot for bot activity. Bier also indicated that the next phase of the anti-spam campaign will focus on purging bots which flooded inboxes with unsolicited messages. The social media platform is also reportedly testing new link-sharing features and AI-driven moderation tools which will further enhance the safety and usability.
