24th June 2025 – (Guangzhou) In the early evening hours of Monday, a Richter scale 4.3 earthquake struck the Qingcheng District of Qingyuan City in Guangdong, with an epicentre 10 kilometres deep. Following the quake, reports emerged of a suspected leaning building within Guangzhou’s Huadu District, leading numerous residents to seek temporary refuge outdoors. Official statements later that night, following expert evaluations, confirmed no anomalies in the building. Furthermore, in the earthquake’s epicentre of Yuantanzhen in the Qingcheng District, 118 individuals were evacuated overnight for safety.
According to local sources familiar with the situation, residents in a residential complex raised concerns, prompting the local police to impose traffic controls in the surrounding areas. By approximately 9pm on Monday, these restrictions were lifted, allowing residents to return home, while experts and testing teams conducted on-site surveys. Representatives from the residential complex’s property management company informed journalists that the perceived building tilt in circulated images was due to an optical illusion. The Huadu District government’s press office in Guangzhou reported on Monday night that the earthquake was felt in Huadu, with rumours circulating about a leaning structure at 5 Yerong Street, Guangzhou. Upon receiving reports, the district government swiftly organised departments and experts to verify the situation on-site, confirming no structural deformities in the basement, tower, or rooftop, with ongoing expert assessments.
Furthermore, according to an announcement from the Qingcheng District Committee’s official WeChat account on Tuesday, the area initiated a Level IV emergency response for earthquake relief. Source Tan Town, the epicentre location, commenced comprehensive inspections to identify older residential areas with potential safety hazards, swiftly evacuating and relocating vulnerable groups such as solitary seniors. By 2am that same day, Yuantanzhen successfully evacuated 77 households comprising 118 individuals, including 58 residents from the epicentre. Supplies of drinking water, food, bedding, and other essentials were prepared for those housed in temporary accommodations. Presently, emergency management authorities from Qingyuan City and the Qingcheng District have collaborated with the Shaoguan (Northern Guangdong) Earthquake Monitoring Centre to swiftly deploy to the epicentre area, installing mobile seismic detection stations to monitor and record any potential aftershocks in real-time.
