Dominic Calvert-Lewin holds ‘fresh talks with Champions League club’ after leaving Everton for free as new contender enters race with Man United for striker

Newcastle are interested in former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin having reportedly held talks with the England international.

The Magpies are in the market for a striker after Callum Wilson recently turned down a new deal to stay at the club.

Calvert-Lewin, 28, left Everton when his contract expired last month after a nine-year stay at Goodison Park.

Eddie Howe and Newcastle are keen to add to their depth up front to ease some of the goal scoring burden on Alexander Isak, particularly with Champions League football next season.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle have been long-time admirers of Calvert-Lewin having made an approach to buy him last summer only to walk away when the cost of the deal became prohibitive.

Calvert-Lewin is reportedly a target for Manchester United and Leeds, although the newly-promoted Premier League side are believed to have stepped back due to wage demands.

After joining Everton in 2016, Calvert Lewin went on to score 71 goals in 274 appearances for the Toffees.

He said the decision to leave Goodison Park at the end of last season was ‘incredibly difficult.’

‘This isn’t something I chose lightly,’ he said on Instagram.

‘Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old.

‘It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.’

Injuries were a problem for Calvert-Lewin last season as he missed 15 Everton games.

He has also been capped for England 11 times.
