Lawmaker Dennis Lam Shun-chiu has said he will not seek another term in Hong Kong’s legislature, joining a growing wave of politicians opting to drop out of the coming election in December.

Lam, who is also an ophthalmologist and has served as a local deputy to the National People’s Congress since 2008, said on Wednesday that he planned to instead focus on his work in sectors such as biotechnology and clinical medicine.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to return to my profession and will not seek re-election,” the 66-year-old said.

“Regardless of the time or position I hold, I remain passionate about serving Hong Kong residents, contributing to the nation and promoting social progress through my knowledge and experience. This is my lifelong commitment, which has never wavered.”

Lam, who has opened eye clinics across the border, said he would devote his time to innovation and implementation in areas such as biomedical technology and clinical medicine, in addition to his work with China’s top legislature.

The legislator added he would help Hong Kong to expand its global ties by organising two international medical conferences next year.

Lam said he made up his mind last week after discussing the move with his wife, describing it as “100 per cent my personal choice”.
