During a closed-door, four-hour meeting in Brussels, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas that Beijing cannot accept a Russian defeat in its war against Ukraine.
According to South China Morning Post on July 4, which cited multiple sources familiar with the closed-door meeting, Wang expressed serious concern that a Russian defeat would shift the full focus of US strategic pressure onto China.
The remarks came during a tense four-hour meeting in Brussels — Kallas’s first major diplomatic engagement since assuming her new post as the EU’s top diplomat. Despite the frank tone, Wang denied any financial or military backing for Moscow.
This statement essentially confirms what many in Brussels already believe to be China’s true position, despite Beijing’s official stance that it is “not a party to the war.”
According to the sources, Wang argued that a Russian loss would be strategically dangerous for China, as it could lead to the United States shifting its full attention to countering Beijing.
The conversation, described as both tense and intense, marked Kaja Kallas’s first major diplomatic engagement in her new role. Throughout the four-hour meeting, Wang Yi firmly rejected accusations that China is providing military or financial support to Moscow. He also repeatedly interrupted the discussion to deliver “history lectures”
Earlier, it was reported that Russia is reportedly seeking to expand transport infrastructure in occupied Crimea with the help of Chinese companies, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service.
