ORLANDO, Fla. – A long-running pop culture convention group is beaming down to Orlando this weekend for its first-ever Star Trek convention.
Creation Entertainment is hosting a Trek to Orlando convention on Saturday. Aug. 23 and Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Doubletree by Hilton across from Universal Orlando.
The long-running convention group has hosted conventions for “Supernatural” and “Vampire Diaries” in Orlando before, but while they’ve hosted Star Trek conventions around the country since 1991, none have been in Orlando.
“That’s the number one thing I keep hearing people are saying. We haven’t had a Star Trek convention in Orlando in a long time, which I think is a shame because it seems like there’s a ton of fans there,” said Ryan Husk, who is co-hosting the convention for the weekend.
Unlike large-scale pop culture conventions, like MegaCon Orlando, Creation’s regional conventions tend to be more relaxed, giving convention goers more time to check out panels and activities, and also spend more time with the celebrity guests.
As a result, the conventions have more positive vibes, Husk said.
“Even if you’re not a Star Trek fan, if you went to a Star Trek convention, you would be in a great mood. You’d be smiling,” Husk said. “People would be smiling at you and high-fiving you or, you know, laughing with you.”
Creation is bringing 20 celebrity guests to Orlando this weekend from across the Star Trek universe. Some of the guests coming include:
-
Anson Mount (Capt. Pike from “Strange New Worlds”)
-
Ethan Peck (Mr. Spock from “Strange New Worlds”)
-
Anthony Rapp (Lt. Stamets from “Discovery”)
-
Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine from “Voyager” and “Picard”)
-
Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher from “The Next Generation” and “Picard”)
-
Connor Trinneer (Trip Tucker from “Enterprise”)
-
Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko from “Deep Space Nine”)
-
Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys from “Deep Space Nine”)
-
Tawny Newsome (Mariner from “Lower Decks”)
-
Eugene Cordero (Rutherford from “Lower Decks”)
Casey Biggs, who played Damar on “Deep Space Nine,” is also attending the show this weekend.
Biggs says he’s been blown away by the convention scene, which has taken him all over the world since the series ended in 1999, and he enjoys regional shows because he gets to spend more time with fans.
“I’m appreciative of the fans and also impressed with their dedication to not only this show, but you find that Star Trek people are usually much more dedicated with engaging in society and in terms of charities and their communities and all the rest of that. So it’s a great world to be a part of,” Biggs said.
In addition to signing autographs and taking photos with fans, Biggs will also take the stage with actors Jeffrey Combs and Vaughn Armstrong for “Saturday Evening with The Rat Pack” a blend of comedy and 1950s lounge music.
Actor Anthony Rapp, who is also an accomplished Broadway star, will also host a concert on Friday evening before the convention.
Trivia sessions, a cosplay contest, discussion panels and more are planned for the two-day event.
Creation officials hope to see a large enough turnout this weekend to continue hosting the Star Trek convention in Florida in the future.
“Fifty years from now and they’re not going to be doing “Friends” conventions, or “ER” conventions, but they’re still going to be doing Star Trek conventions,” Biggs said. It’s that important, I think, to the zeitgeist of what the fans are about and what society is about too.”
