Carnival Cruise Line prepares for hurricane season disruptions

With no hurricane landfalls in the U.S. yet this year, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been quieter than usual, but that may be about to change.

While hurricane season typically reaches its peak by mid-September, this year’s most active period seems to be coming later as tropical activity intensifies in the Atlantic after a rare September lull.

As the season’s second hurricane, Gabrielle, now barrels toward the Azores and Portugal, the National Hurricane Center is tracking two strengthening disturbances taking aim at the Caribbean. One has already become Tropical Storm Humberto while the other is expected to soon develop into a tropical depression near The Bahamas.

What does that mean for cruisers setting sail for The Bahamas and Caribbean in the coming days?

Here’s the latest hurricane season update from Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival is monitoring threatening storms in the Caribbean

After receiving a number of weather-related questions from concerned cruise passengers on his popular Facebook page, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed the threatening situation in a Sept. 25 Facebook video.

Many cruisers have been anxious to know if the cruise line is changing any cruise itineraries as a result of the brewing storm systems. According to Heald, no changes have been made yet, but Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center is actively monitoring the disturbances.

“At the moment, at the time of me making this video, there are no changes, but what is happening is that we have our Fleet Operations Center — I wish you could see it.

I really do. It is a fantastic place. It’s looked after 24 hours a day by a brilliant group of maritime experts, past officers and captains, and it’s monitored 24 hours a day, and it is there, of course, to keep everybody safe,” Heald explained.

Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center works closely with the captains of its ships, and together they determine the best and safest course for their sailings.

No Carnival cruise itinerary changes yet, but they could be necessary

Knowing how disappointing it is for passengers to have their cruise itinerary changed and considering the dynamic nature of weather, Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center tends to take a wait-and-see approach to weather situations rather than change itineraries at the first sign of potential bad weather.

“Now, they’ll be looking at all the weather, everything that’s been going on, and they will continue to do so. And then they will liaise with the captains of the ships, and of course, we will wait up to the very last minute in order to see where the bad weather is, keep you away from it, and try and give you the itinerary that you planned. So that’s been the case,” Heald explained.

More Carnival Cruise Line:

The brand ambassador reiterated that as of the morning of Sept. 25, there are no Carnival cruise itinerary changes as a result of Tropical Storm Humberto or the second disturbance, but passengers will be notified by email if and when changes are made.

“We always keep you safe, and at the moment, there are no changes. But if there are, our Chief Communications Officer, Chris, and his team will send out notifications and emails, and I’ll copy them here for you all as well,” Heald added. “I know you will all have lots of fun, and I absolutely know that you’re going to be absolutely safe. And let’s hope that the bad weather will dissipate.”
